Set in 1930s Beijing, a rising Peking opera star and a wealthy, patriotic businessman form an unlikely close bond as Japanese occupation closes in on the city. Their friendship, and the loyalty it demands of both of them, is tested against the backdrop of war, espionage and the slow collapse of the world of traditional opera they both love.
