Unidentified alien objects suddenly appear in the skies worldwide, and rather than evacuate them, the government drafts high school students into a hastily organized combat unit to fight back, reasoning that teenagers are more expendable than trained soldiers. A single class is handed weapons and thrown into a war they never signed up for, and the show doesn't shy away from how bleak that premise actually is for the kids living through it.
