The production team behind the Republican-era drama Overdo has replaced its AI-generated opening sequence after facing widespread criticism from viewers following the drama’s premiere.

Overdo, starring Zhang Ling He and Wang Chu Ran, debuted on July 19. While the series had generated significant buzz ahead of its release, much of the early conversation centered on its opening sequence, which was created using AI.

Many viewers criticized the sequence for its unnatural visuals, awkward compositing, and artificial lighting. Some described it as looking “plastic” or resembling a slideshow, arguing that it felt out of place compared to the drama’s otherwise high production values.

In response to the backlash, the production team quickly replaced the AI-generated opening with a new version featuring live-action footage. The updated sequence was released online, and the drama’s official Weibo account issued a public apology on July 21.

In its statement, the team explained that the original opening was intended to quickly introduce the childhood history between the main characters through fast-paced transitions. However, they acknowledged that the creative decision failed to meet viewers’ expectations.

The production team apologized to fans for the disappointment and revealed that they began remaking the opening immediately after receiving feedback on the day of the premiere. After several days of work, the new live-action opening officially replaced the original version.

The statement concluded by thanking viewers for their feedback, adding that audience opinions remain the most important standard as the team continues to improve the series.
